The core competitiveness of API pipe stems from its perfect standard system. At present, API 5L standard-led pipeline and API 5CT standardized oil well pipe constitute two main categories. Among them, API 5L pipeline pipe is suitable for all scenarios from low-pressure gathering lines to high-pressure long-distance pipelines by means of strict mechanical property tests (such as yield strength and tensile strength) and corrosion resistance requirements; while API 5CT oil well pipe is designed for high-temperature and high-pressure environments downhole, and is subdivided into different grades of steel, such as J55, N80, and P110, to satisfy the needs of deep and ultra-deep well mining. These standards not only specify the chemical composition, dimensional tolerances and other hard indicators, but also promote the technological upgrading of the industry through regular revisions (e.g., API 5L in 2024 will add requirements for hydrogen embrittlement protection).
Technological breakthroughs crack application problems
In the face of the trend of energy development extending to complex fields such as deep sea, polar regions and shale gas, API pipe technology continues to make breakthroughs. In terms of material innovation, Baosteel developed X80 grade anti-deformation pipeline pipe, by adding niobium, vanadium and other micro-alloying elements, so that the pipe still maintains good toughness at low temperatures of - 40 ℃, and was successfully applied in the northern section of the China-Russia East Natural Gas Pipeline; in terms of manufacturing process, Tianjin Steel Pipe Group adopts the “on-line quenching + tempering” process, the anti-extrusion resistance of API 5CT casing will be improved to -40 ℃. In terms of manufacturing process, Tianjin Steel Pipe Group adopts “on-line quenching + tempering” technology to improve the anti-extrusion strength of API 5CT casing by 20%, which meets the severe working conditions of ultra-deep oil and gas wells in Sichuan Basin. The innovation of welding technology is also noteworthy. High-frequency straight seam welded (HFW) API pipe has realized welding precision of ±0.1mm through laser tracking weld system, replacing part of seamless pipe in shale gas gathering and transmission network and reducing cost by 30%; spiral submerged arc welded pipe has overcome the problem of strength of annular weld seam of large-diameter (≥1,422mm) pipeline through double-sided submerged arc welding process, and has become the main pipe in the third line of the West-to-East natural gas pipeline project. The global API pipe market presents the pattern of “strong east and stable west”. China as the largest producer, API pipe production reached 28 million tons in 2024, accounting for 45% of the global total, of which PetroChina Baoji Petroleum Steel Pipe, Sinopec Steel Pipe Company and other companies with a complete product line, occupying 15% of the international market. Demand side, the Middle East oil and gas development projects (such as Saudi Arabia Jubail Petrochemical Park) annual procurement of API pipe more than 3 million tons, mainly for the expansion of oil pipeline network; North America shale gas recovery driven by the demand for API 5L X70-grade pipeline pipe year-on-year growth of 18%, and Southeast Asian countries, the construction of the LNG terminal has spawned a boom in the procurement of corrosion-resistant API pipe. It is worth noting that the “dual-carbon” goal is reshaping the market structure, API pipe companies have low carbon production layout, Anshan Iron & Steel Group through the electric arc furnace short process production of API 5CT oil pipe, compared with the traditional process to reduce carbon emissions by 40%, and its low-carbon certified products have entered the European market. At the same time, the recyclable API pipe technology has made progress, the modular casing system developed by U.S. company Tenaris, the recycling rate has increased to 85%, and has been applied in the North Sea oilfields with strict environmental requirements. Future Trends Focus on Three Major Directions
With the acceleration of energy transformation, API pipe industry is evolving towards high-end, intelligent and green direction. In the field of high-end, API 5L H2 grade pipeline pipe adapted for hydrogen energy transmission has entered the test stage, requiring the hydrogen permeability of the pipe to be less than 0.01cc/cm²/h; in terms of intelligence, HISCO has built a digital twin production line in the whole process, realizing real-time traceability of quality parameters of API pipe from billet to finished product, and increasing the inspection efficiency by 50%; greening promotes the application of biodegradable lubricating oil in API pipe processing, and 30% of the domestic lubricants have already been applied to API pipe processing.
