The main reason lies in its material composition. Carbon steel is made of iron and carbon without added anti-corrosion alloy elements such as chromium and nickel. When it is exposed to air, moisture, rainwater or humid environments, iron reacts with oxygen and water to form iron oxide, which is what we call rust.

Once rust appears on carbon steel, it will gradually spread over the surface, reduce thickness, weaken mechanical strength, and even affect the service life and safety of structures and equipment.

Proper anti-rust measures can effectively slow down the oxidation process, including surface painting, galvanizing, oil sealing, and keeping the steel in dry storage conditions. Choosing reasonable protection methods is essential to extend the service life of carbon steel materials.
